Celtic player ratings as Scott Bain and Scott Brown toil in fresh Europa League disaster

Lightning struck twice for Celtic in the Czech Republic as a second straight 4-1 defeat to Sparta Prague sent them crashing out of the Europa League.

Neil Lennon 's team were boosted by the returns of Christopher Jullien and Odsonne Edouard and the latter looked back at his best when he opened the scoring with a fine finish.

Their elation didn't last long however as minutes later David Hancko was on hand to fire in an equaliser.

They trailed at the break after Lukas Julis, who scored a hattrick at Parkhead, popped up with goal number two.

And then the striker made it three after some more lazy defending from the visitors.

The mirror-image scoreline was confirmed when Srdan Plavsic took advantage of some erratic positioning from Scott Bain to make it 4-1 with the last kick of the ball.

It was another major blow for Lennon and his team and here’s how  Record Sport   rated their players...

Scott Bain

Pulled off a couple of smart stops in the first half but was left exposed for the first goal. Might have done better with the second. Was all over the place for the final goal. 5

Diego Laxalt

Remains one of the few bright spots for Celtic right now. Always willing and a constant worker, but yet again part of a team that failed to win. 5

Hatem Elhamed

Posed a threat up the right hand side during the positive early start and looked relatively solid on his return to the side. 5

Christopher Jullien

Understandably rusty after a couple of months out.
Didn’t get enough on his header for the first and caught out the back post for the second. 5

Kris Ajer

Still having problems positionally. He had to be more proactive in dealing with the cross ball for the second goals. 5
Scott Brown

It’s not happening for the Celtic skipper right now. Brushed aside when Sparta struck back, he was loose on the ball and unable to dictate. 5

The Frenchman continues to drift in and out of games he should be grabbing by the scruff of the neck. Moments of class but needs to be more. 5

Callum McGregor

Played Sparta onside for the second goal and played deeper in general. Tried to inject urgency. 5

Ryan Christie

Busy searching for pockets of space and posed a threat with the odd pot shot on goal. 5

Mohamed Elyounoussi

Dangerous and direct when the ball came his way but didn’t get enough service. 5

Odsonne Edouard

Much more like his old self. Goal was sensational but should have grabbed another. 5

Subs:
Tom Rogic (for Brown 67) On for his 200th appearance and part of the late push for a leveller. 4

Patryk Kilmala (for Edouard 82) Games was out of sight by the time he found his feet. 2

Not used: Subs: Barkas; Hazard; Taylor; Duffy; Bitton; Ajeti; Frimpong;Henderson.
