Celtic player ratings as breathless Kyogo Furuhashi shines again despite horrific Carl Starfelt own goal

Celtic ensured their name will be in the hat in Istanbul for the Europa League group stage draw.

But it was a nervy night in Holland for Ange Postecoglou and his men as they progressed despite suffering defeat to AZ Alkmaar.

Kyogo Furuhashi was once again the goal hero as he continues his incredible start to life at the Hoops.

However, the Parkhead men remain suspect at the back and Joe Hart and Carl Starfelt were both culpable as the Dutch roared back to take the lead.

Celtic were clinging on at times but they did enough and travel back across the North Sea with progress secured going into the Old Firm derby at Ibrox.

Joe Hart

Misjudged the pace of the ball for AZ’s leveller when he should have been steaming out of his box to clear. Didn’t let it to affect him though. Made a couple of big saves when Celtic needed bailing out. 6

Anthony Ralston

Faced an extremely tough task with Karlsson on his case constantly with AZ aiming long diagonals over his head. But never gave up the fight and was still busting a gut doing the crucial closing spell. 7

Stephen Welsh

Failed to deal with a simple hoof up the park for the equaliser but wasn’t helped by his keeper. Decent with the ball at his feet but struggled to deal with the aerial threat. Made two big blocks in an improved second half. 6

Carl Starfelt

The own goal was horrific. The Swede had a simple job to clear but make a huge hash of it but it summed up a nervy opening. Got rag dolled by Aboukhlal but stood up to the challenge more in the second half. 5

Greg Taylor

Heavily involved early on with a lot of the attacking breaks but never recovered after busting his shoulder following a slip. Tried to bravely battle on but eventually had to go off. 4

Callum McGregor

Found it difficult to control the game with AZ identifying the skipper as a key component and gluing a man to him at all times. Still showed quick feet to get the ball forward at times. 7

David Turnbull

Often one of the few Celts to show a bit of calm on the ball during the wild opening period. Became more influential as game wore as the Hoops enjoyed more of the ball. 7

Tom Rogic

Too often crowded out and even his neat footwork couldn’t get him out of the jam. Tried to drive the side up the pitch but kept running up dead ends on a frustrating evening for the Aussie. 6

Liel Abada

Got off to a flier with a brilliant ball for the opener. Looked really lively but didn’t get enough of the ball when AZ took control. A willing outball though and kept harassing defenders any time they tried to build from the back. 6

Ryan Christie

Never got a foothold on the game and was left chasing to get involved. Touch wasn’t quite with him but grew in to the game as it wore on and he started to find pockets of space. 6

Kyogo Furuhashi

Took his tally to seven goals in seven games and was breathless again. Chased down everything and was clever when used as an outball. Just needed more help from those around him. 7

Substitutes

Adam Montgomery (for Taylor 24) Thrown in at the deep end but got to half time and was neat in possession after the break. 6

Odsonne Edouard (for Rogic 60) Helped turn the tide as he provided an outball when the side needed it most. 5

Ismaila Soro (for Kyogo 86) Added protection late on. 3
