Celtic player eyed by Airdrie as Diamonds boss sends transfer message to Hoops after 'incredible' goal

Airdrie manager Ian Murray says contact has been made with Celtic over bringing Kerr McInroy back to the club during the winter transfer window.

The midfielder has been an ever-present in the Diamonds midfield since arriving on loan from the Hoops in October.

McInroy has previously stated that he doesn't see his future at Celtic, with his deal at Parkhead set to expire in May, and a one-year extension clause isn't likely to be activated.

Murray only signed him on loan until January 10th and after the midfielder scored a sensational goal in last weekend's 3-1 League One win over Alloa, the Airdrie boss says McInroy is one he'd like to keep.

He explained: "Kerr's goal was incredible and I don't think any goalkeeper in the land would have saved that. Kerr has been great and since his first game, he's been superb.

"He's such a lovely guy. He's been great with the boys and he's a very good player. We have been fortunate but I would like to think we have helped him.

"We've made our intentions clear to Celtic and Kerr that we would like to keep him. But he's not our player. It has to work for Celtic, for Kerr and for us.

"The most important thing is he's playing football. He might be in no man's land a wee bit but he's enjoying his football. He's been great. His goal and performance against Alloa showed how good a player he is."

Murray wants to strengthen his squad in January with at least two additions.

While Covid has proven problematic for clubs in recent weeks - Airdrie's game with Queen's Park last month postponed due to virus issues - Murray says it won't impact transfers.

He added: "We have to be mindful that Covid is going around and things can change in one day. We've seen a lot of depleted squads over the last 10 days and I don't anticipate it getting better soon.

"I'm not sure if we will need to carry a bigger squad in January but we will look to strengthen, like every team. We do have scope to do that.

"It was always our intention to strengthen at the halfway stage and we maybe need to do that as we have picked up a couple of injuries.

"We've been working on it for the last couple of months, but sometimes, players are under contract elsewhere or a manager changes. We want at least two players."
