Celtic pass masters among best in Europa League as Ange Postecoglou’s scattergun shooters top the charts too

Celtic might have only just picked up their first points of the Europa League group stage against Ferencvaros.

But UEFA's official stats show Ange Postecoglou can be optimistic that his style of football is translating to continental competition despite some quarters urging him to change tack.

A 2-0 win sees them in third after Peter Stoger's team were brushed aside in Glasgow's east end, with a Budapest away day to come in a fortnight's time, following 4-3 and 4-0 losses to Real Betis and Bayer Leverkusen.

Even in the Tuesday afternoon encounter there were some hairy moments and loose passes but those individual errors shouldn't spoil the numbers that illustrate Postecoglou's team are playing the right way.

The data shows his side are third in the entire competition for passing accuracy, with 88 per cent per game on average.

Only French duo Marseille and Lyon boast a better percentage of passes that meet their intended target, with the Parkhead club ahead of Lazio, PSV Eindhoven and Real Sociedad to name a few, and their number was boosted with a top-drawer 90 per cent against the Hungarian champions.

It's the attacking brand of football that Celtic fans have grown to love about Postecoglou with deadly duo Kyogo and Jota leading the charge — and the shooting table is even better reading.

With 51 total attempts, they top all 32 Europa League teams for that metric, ahead of Group G rivals Bayer Leverkusen in second.

There is the caveat of having played an extra game at this stage, but even so, it's 11 more than the Bundesliga giants and they'll still be right up there come Thursday night when the rest of the competition catches up.

They also just shade the shots on target chart too and despite those losses in the first two games the underlying numbers can give fans some confidence that a top two spot is not yet a lost cause.
