Celtic outline social media boycott reasons as they blast 'horrendous' racial and sectarian abuse

Celtic have confirmed they will be part of this weekend's social media boycott after the SFA's announcement earlier on Wednesday afternoon.

The governing body's accounts will lie dormant this weekend as those within the game are fed up with target racist and personal abuse, along with those from the SPFL, Scottish Women's Football and PFA Scotland.

They encouraged clubs to join and Celtic have laid out their reasons for the four-day silence in a bold address against sickening abuse directed at club figures throughout the season.

The boycott runs parallel to a similar initiative in England from 3pm on Friday to 11.59pm on Monday, while Rangers players and staff switched off earlier this month for a weekend.

A club statement read: "As a Club who has welcomed all since 1888, we are pleased to support this collective campaign.

"Sadly, through various social media platforms Celtic players, staff and supporters for some time have been subjected to racial and sectarian attacks and horrendous personal abuse - this is something which simply has to stop.

"Abusing someone because of the colour of their skin, abusing an individual due to their religion, unacceptable personal attacks or pathetically mocking the death of a loved one - our players, staff and supporters have, tragically, experienced it all through social media.

"We must all make a stand and together defeat this negative, damaging behaviour which inflicts so much harm.

"Social media can be an important, powerful tool. Let's use it properly."
