Celtic next manager news as Rafa Benitez set for major call and Julien Stephan receives backing

It could be a long couple of months for Celtic fans desperate for news on their team's search for a new managers.

A host of big names have been linked and the bookies have been unable to pin down a firm favourite to succeed Neil Lennon.

And that is because the process to identify the man who will carry the fight to Rangers next season and beyond is currently being identified.

Throw in a new director of football to join the next boss in the Parkhead rebuild and there is plenty for supporters to get excited about.

Record Sport runs the rule over the latest news and updates on the names in the frame.

Rafa Benitez set for Napoli decision

Rino Gattuso famously spoke about things going being either "sometimes maybe good, sometimes maybe s***", and it's certainly the latter for the former Milan and Rangers firebrand at present.

The Napoli manager is expected leave his role at the end of the season and Rafa Benitez is among the favourites to succeed him at the Diego Maradona Stadium.

Benitez is regarded as the one that got away by club chief Aurelio De Laurentiis when he swapped Naples for Real Madrid in 2015.

The Spaniard was a smash hit with Napoli and several reports suggest he tops the wanted list this time around.

Benitez remains among the bookies favourites to succeed Lennon and there's the potential for a box office rivalry with former Liverpool protege Steven Gerrard.

Celtic tipped to interest Eddie Howe

David Webb believes Eddie Howe will be intrigued by the vacancy at Celtic and is certain the 43-year-old is aiming for a long-term project.

Speaking to the Glasgow Times, he said: "With Ed it's always about the project and not necessarily the club or size of the club.

"When he was at Bournemouth he was linked with loads of roles, clubs considered higher than Bournemouth, but he wasn't quick to jump.

"He will take his time on the right project so if he feels Celtic are that club and can fit in the values that he has, potentially yes (he'd be interested).

"I think Celtic are going to be a club that would be of interest to most managers. They want to win things and, historically, they're very successful. They maintain European status every year so they'll have a certain appeal.

"Then you would look at club ambition, manager suitability. Eddie is all about the project rather than a big-named club.

"He's very loyal so if he's committed to a project, he's committed to a project. He won't be looking for a quick-fix, it will be a long project where he can build longevity and success."

Julien Stephan's odds are tumbling

And the 40-year-old is already being touted as a potential option to become the next manager.

Journalist Robin Bairnier has extolled his virtues and believes he would be a better choice than many of the other names in the mix despite having only left Rennes on Monday.

He said: "Celtic could do a lot worse than sound out Stephan's position.

"Seems a more realistic target than some names linked to the post and infinitely more capable than others."

Stephan is available between 25/1 and 33/1 and his odds have been decreasing over the past 24 hours.

Steve Clarke makes crystal clear admission

The Scotland manager has his backers but he effectively removed himself from the race to succeed Lennon.

Clarke was put on the spot after taking part in a Q&A by youngsters at Edinburgh-based club Team United, which supports young people with autism.

He said: "I will be going on a long holiday after the Euros.

“And I am contracted with Scotland until 2022, when I’ll hopefully be taking us to the World Cup in Qatar.”
