Celtic monitor Atletico Madrid Moussa Dembele bid ahead of potential transfer windfall

Celtic could be set for an unexpected transfer windfall if former striker Moussa Dembele completes a rumoured January move.

The 24-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to Spanish heavyweights Atletico Madrid as a potential replacement for the recently departed Diego Costa, who cancelled his deal in with Los Colchoneros earlier this month.

French side Olympique Lyonnais paid almost £20 million for the ex-Celtic star in August 2018, but included in the deal was a sell-on clause netting the Hoops ten per cent of any future move.

That may now come into play, with Atleti and Red Bull Leipzig weighing up moves for the ex-Parkhead favourite.

Footmercato claims Diego Simeone is an admirer of Dembele and could make a bid in the winter window after Costa's departure - which the club attribute to 'personal reasons' - left Uruguyan forward Luis Suarez as their only natural striking option.

However, it is claimed that Espanyol's Raul De Tomas, top scorer in the second tier Segunda Division, Real Sociedad's Willian Jose, Napoli's Arkadiusz Milik and Real Betis academy product Loren Moron are also being considered.

The Hoops would also likely be forced to wait until the summer for any cash injection, with the report adding that Atleti are considering a 'loan-to-buy' offer, meaning any transfer would not be completed until the end of the campaign.

Dembele has struggled for game time this season, making just 13 appearances and finding the net just once.

He had hit the 20-goal mark in each of his last two campaigns, with an impressive hit rate of 24 in 46 last season alone.
