Celtic match poses 'tough challenge' Motherwell must relish says boss

Motherwell manager Graham Alexander believes his side's recent results merit confidence ahead of Saturday's clash with Celtic.

Alexander's team are fourth in the Premiership, two places above Celtic prior to Saturday's league meeting.

The Steelmen have taken a point off Rangers and their two league defeats have come to in-form Hearts and Hibs.

Alexander knows Celtic will be a stern test for his side, but recent results should mean it's not one to fear.

"We feel we have achieved some good results and have a good points tally," said Alexander. "That's what it's all about at this stage of the season.

"We have to focus on the next challenge. It's certainly a tough one, but one we have to relish. We must go into it full of confidence - as our results warrant that confidence."

A positive mentality is a big part of Alexander's approach at Fir Park. He is keen to stress to his players they are good enough to contend with teams like Celtic.

The Motherwell manager insists some childhood reflection can inspire players.

“Everything is in the mind,” the 50-year-old said. “Everything. It’s all in the mentality. When you get to be a professional footballer you are in the top half a per cent of anyone who has kicked a football.

"There are so many people who played football from childhood to their adult life and only the cream gets to play professional football.

“They all come in with dreams of winning. When you are a kid, you don’t think about getting beat, you dream about scoring a winning goal or winning a cup or a league.

"The game beats you down a little bit because it’s not like that, it’s not a dream all the time.

“But if you keep that focus on what you thought about when you were a kid and how you can achieve it, and all the obstacles you have overcome to actually become a professional footballer.

"That’s what you have got to plug into."
