Celtic manager Martin O’Neill, 74, in hospital after ‘small procedure’

  • Celtic have revealed that manager Martin O’Neill has undergone a “small procedure” and is currently recovering in hospital.
  • O’Neill, 74, had two interim spells at Celtic last season, and led the club to a league and cup double, before signing a one-year deal in June to be the club’s permanent manager.
  • He was in the dugout when Celtic made a winning start to their title defence by beating Dundee on Monday night.
  • The club released a statement on Wednesday afternoon that read: “In response to speculation, we can confirm that Martin O’Neill has undergone a small procedure in hospital. We would envisage Martin being released from hospital in the next day or two and on behalf of Martin, we would like to thank supporters for their kind wishes. We would ask that the privacy of Martin and his family is respected.”
  • Celtic are due to travel to Kilmarnock on Sunday, and it is yet to be confirmed whether O’Neill will be in the dugout for that game.
