Celtic 'make move' to bring ex-Hamilton star back to Scotland

Celtic are reportedly about to make a move aimed at bringing former Hamilton midfielder James McCarthy back to Scotland.

But the Scottish champions may need to wait until the summer when the 30-year-old is a free agent, with Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson bringing him back into the side since the turn of the year.

It has been reported by Football Insider that Celtic are 'keeping tabs on Glasgow-born McCarthy's situation'. They were linked with a move for him in the summer transfer window, but nothing materialised.

It is believed that McCarthy is aware of the interest, and with him being a lifelong supporter, sources say he would be keen on the move.

McCarthy is no stranger to Scottish football and to Hamilton Accies fans, having made over 100 appearances after breaking through to their first team in 2006.

The midfielder stayed at New Douglas Park before moving on to Wigan Athletic for a record £1.2million in a five-year deal.

He has been playing down south ever since, moving to Everton and now Palace, with 263 top-flight games under his belt, and 42 Republic of Ireland caps to his name.

McCarthy is the youngest to play for Hamilton in the 21st century, making his debut against Airdrie United just before his 16th birthday and at 16 years and 55 days, he's also the youngest to score for the club, coming in a Scottish Cup defeat to Livingston.

While McCarthy has been recalled to the Palace first team, and played in the 4-0 defeat to Man City at the weekend, it's believed he would be keen to move, and has been seen by many to be a replacement for Scott Brown.

It has been speculated that the Hoops would need to make room in their squad, and 'one of those expected to leave' is Olivier Ntcham.
