Celtic make FIFA rules admission as club respond to demand for mass international recall

Celtic have responded to calls for their top-team stars to be withdrawn from international duty.

The club have been dealt a double Covid-19 blow over the past 24 hours that has sparked fears over further setbacks.

Odsonne Edouard tested positive for the virus in France while Ryan Christie has been ordered to self-isolate after being in contact with Stuart Armstrong, who has been infected.

The Parkhead club earlier declared their intention to seek talks with the Scottish Government over the process under which players are forced to quarantine.

But a statement admits recalling players from their national team setups is governed by FIFA.

It said: “The club will always do everything possible to protect the health and wellbeing of our players, but the release of players for international matches is governed by the FIFA regulations.”

Earlier, Celtic joined Arsenal in requesting clarification over the self-isolation process.

The Gunners, too, have been rocked by the dramatic development with Kieran Tierney also among those isolating.

Both Christie and Tierney have returned negative tests despite being deemed close contacts of Armstrong.

Government guidelines dictate individuals deemed to have had contact with an infected person must still isolate due to the virus' 14-day incubation period.

A Celtic statement said: "Following today’s news regarding Ryan Christie, he has reiterated his adherence to all relevant protocols while on international duty.

"In light of this, Celtic confirmed today that it aims to open dialogue with the Scottish Government and other authorities to fully understand the self-isolation procedures for those players who continue to deliver negative test results, as Ryan has."

And Christie added: “I am so disappointed by the events of today and the potential effects this could have on my country and club.

"As I have operated within these protocols for such a long time now, I am well aware of all the rules and social distancing from team mates has become the norm and something I have observed.

"The situation is very frustrating, particularly as I don’t believe I have done anything wrong.”

The isolation period rules Christie out of the October 17 clash with Rangers.

Edouard could also miss out after he tested positive while on international duty with France.

The other Celtic players on international duty are Callum McGregor, Greg Taylor, Vasilis Barkas, Kristoffer Ajer, Moi Elyounoussi, Shane Duffy, Nir Bitton, Hatem Abd Elhamed.

Patryk Klimala, Karamoko Dembele and Conor Hazard are representing their respective nations at youth level.
