Celtic 'make contact' with Newcastle-linked Eddie Howe over replacing Neil Lennon

Celtic have reportedly made contact with Eddie Howe over their vacant manager role.

The former Bournemouth boss has been strongly tipped as a potential successor for Steve Bruce at Newcastle United in recent months.

A ChronicleLive survey over the Magpies head coach's future revealed Howe was the supporter's choice to become the new manager at St James' Park should Mike Ashley make a change.

However, Sky Sports claim Celtic have made a move for the 43-year-old who is said to be 'considering a number of options' almost a year after leaving the Cherries.

Bruce's future at St James' Park has come under intense scrutiny in recent months following a dreadful run of just two wins in their last 20 matches.

Newcastle have plummeted from mid-table into a relegation dogfight, and the thumping defeat at Brighton last time out has left the Magpies just two points clear of the drop zone.

However, Bruce is understood to retain the backing of owner Mike Ashley despite recent results and the wealth of fan unrest against 60-year-old.

Former boss Rafa Benitez, Frank Lampard and Chris Wilder were among the alternatives listed by fans in our survey as possible replacements in the Magpies dugout.
