Red Star Belgrade have robbed Celtic’s Invincibles of their world record points total after an astonishing end to their Serbian League campaign.
Brendan Rodgers ’ Hoops previously held the honour when they amassed 106 Scottish Premiership points after going unbeaten in 38 games.
Celtic won 34 of their league games that season and beat the previous world record which was claimed by Barry Town of Wales twenty years previously, earning them the ‘Invincibles’ tag.
However, Red Star completed an incredible season by winning their last three games 6-0, 5-0 and 5-1 to end the season with 108 points, beating Celtic by two.
The Serbians won 35 out of the 38 league games they played and drew three others. They scored 114 goals and conceded 20 all term.
That meant they beat the record set by Brendan Rodgers’ unbeaten side, who drew only four games that season against Caley Thistle, Rangers, Partick Thistle and Ross County. The Parkhead side scored 106 league goals that season.
Red Star manager Dejan Stankovic said after their 5-1 win against Matalac: “It was a magnificent way to end a historic season for us.
“We still have the Cup Final to play, but congratulations to my phenomenal players and to create a world record, in this season of all seasons, has been an incredible achievement.”
