Celtic look for transfer deadline day busting move as they push through £11m spending barrier

Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou completed an entire new team of transfers with a deadline day swoop for Benfica star Jota and Greek goal machine Giorgos Giakoumakis.

But the Hoops also saw Quadruple Treble heroes Odsonne Edouard, Ryan Christie and Leigh Griffiths all call time on their Parkhead careers on a frantic final day of the window.

Hitman Giakoumakis checked in for £2.5m on a five year deal while highly-rated Jota arrived on a season long loan – with a £6.8m price tag for next summer.

Record Sport understands Celts were also pushing late towards the deadline to land a centre back on loan – but they took their summer spending spree through the £20m barrier with 11 new faces.

They also banked almost £30m as Edouard headed to Crystal Palace on a five-year £75,000 per-week deal for an initial £15m, which could rise to £18.5m with incentives.

Christie departed for Championship Bournemouth in a £2.5m move despite being into the last six months of his Parkhead contract while Griffiths effectively waved goodbye to Celts for good on a season long switch to Dundee, with his Hoops deal up next summer.

The window closed on an extraordinary few months of sweeping changes at Parkhead with 11 new signings and another 11 departing.

Postecoglou splashed the cash on the likes of Kyogo Furahashi, Carl Starfelt, Leil Abada, Joe Hart and now Giakoumakis – while £14m Kris Ajer led the exodus, along with former skipper Scott Brown, Olivier Ntcham and Jack Hendry, along with fringe men Vakoun Bayo and Marian Shved.

Hendry’s quickfire £6.8m switch to Brugge from Oostende also banked the Hoops almost £1m in kickbacks from a sell-on clause.

Celtic came out the window with an extra £10m in the bank and a new look team.

New Bhoys Giakoumakis and Jota revealed their delight at finalising their moves to Glasgow, with the pair penning their contracts in Paris and London with a view to hooking up with the Hoops squad by the end of the week.

Former VVV Venlo hitman Giakoumakis – who was the leading goalscorer in Holland’s top flight last term – said: “It is a club I have liked for a long time and it will now be an honour to wear this famous jersey.

“To know that the manager wanted me so much to join Celtic is really humbling and it makes me know I have made the right choice.”

Wide man Jota was earmarked as a huge prospect when he burst on to the scene at Benfica as a youngster – where he once had a mammoth £80m buyout clause in his contract – but he arrives in Scotland looking to kick-start his career following a frustrating loan spell in Spain with Real Valladolid.

The 22-year-old said: “I am very happy to join such an historic and exciting team as Celtic. Having played in Portugal and Spain, everyone knows that Celtic is a huge name across Europe and a club with real heart and soul.

“It will be a pleasure and an honour to fight for this club and I can’t wait to feel the atmosphere from our supporters at Paradise. I know the Manager wants us to play fast, attacking football, the way it should be played and, I can’t wait to play my part in this.

“I will work hard to do all I can to make the fans happy and enjoy some good times together.”

Griffiths packed his Parkhead bags after rattling 123 goals since his arrival from Wolves for £1.5m in January 2014.

Edouard also played a huge part in Celtic’s success in recent years, with 88 goals in 123 games, following his initial loan spell and then £9.5m transfer from PSG, who will bank around £6m of the Palace fee from a hefty sell-on clause.

Christie – who is on Scotland duty – checked out for the Cherries in a move understood to be worth up to £2.5m after snubbed Premier League Burnley.

Celts have made moves to keep the 26-year-old playmaker – who was in the final six months of his contract – but were informed the attacker was sold on a fresh challenge down south.
