Celtic loanee and Irish starlet's Motherwell debuts delayed as boss provides injury update

Motherwell manager Graham Alexander says the squad he picks to face Morton in the Scottish Cup fourth round will be a strong one - despite injury concerns.

New signings Ross Tierney and Celtic loanee Liam Shaw missed Tuesday night's Premiership match with Ross County and will be unavailable again the cup.

The Steelmen are also nursing other niggles ahead of the game against Championship opposition.

Alexander's men last met the Ton in Scottish Cup action last year and needed penalty kicks to progress to the next round, eventually reaching the last eight.

'Well head into the game off the back of a bruising 3-1 defeat to Ross County and Alexander has some selection dilemmas as he looks for his team to bounce back.

He said: "We've got a couple of niggles and a couple of doubts for the game. A couple of boys took a knock or two. But we haven't got anyone back who wasn't available Tuesday.

"We will probably be a couple players down but we will still have a strong enough team to perform to the levels required."

Alexander understands why it is frustrating for his new players not to get going in claret and amber quickly, but is not too concerned as the knocks are minor.

He said: "We brought these guys (Shaw and Tierney) here to compete for a reason. I am not one of these people who will go overboard when we get injuries.

"They are part of professional football. If you want to train and compete, and play to the right levels, it's a competitive game. People are going to get knocks here and there.

"But we know that the players will need to play through a little discomfort and pain once the season gets going. It's a tough sport and a physical one.

"We believe the players we have brought in are good enough to help us improve. It's frustrating for any player to be missing as we need them all.

"It's nothing major. We lost a couple the day before the Ross County game and they were touch and go. They didn't make it. We'll see how they are but it's nothing major."
