Celtic Lisbon Lion Bertie Auld diagnosed with dementia

Celtic legend Bertie Auld has been diagnosed with dementia, the club has announced.

The 83-year-old, who lives in Strathaven, won the European Cup with the Hoops in 1967 as part of the famous Lisbon Lions who beat Inter Milan 2-1 in Portugal to become the first British team to lift the trophy.

Celtic revealed the sad news in a short statement on their website this afternoon.

The statement read: “Bertie Auld`s family would like all Celtic fans and football fans in general to keep Bertie in their prayers as they confirmed today that he is suffering with dementia.

“The family would like to thank everyone for their huge support and request privacy during this difficult time.

“Bertie is being well cared for at his own home, surrounded by all the family.

"Everyone at Celtic would like to add their best wishes to Bertie and his family.

“Bertie is a true Celtic icon, one of our greatest sons and someone the club and our supporters love and respect dearly.

“We will continue to give Bertie and his family all our love, care and our ongoing full support at this hugely challenging time.”

Auld also had spells with Dumbarton, Birmingham City and Hibernian.

He is a strong supporter of the work Strathaven Dynamo have done in the local community and backed their plans to bring the W3ST training facility to fruition in recent years.
