Celtic-linked Dean Henderson given Manchester United boss backing as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reveals keeper's wish

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists Manchester United backup keeper Dean Henderson wants to stay despite rumours swirling over a Celtic loan switch.

With £5m summer signing Vasilis Barkas relegated to the Hoops bench by Neil Lennon speculation is rife if another shot-stopper could arrive in the January window and Henderson has been one of the names mentioned.

He is currently playing second fiddle to David De Gea between the Old Trafford sticks despite repeatedly expressing his desire to win a starting spot after finishing his last loan spell at Sheffield United.

The 23-year-old will be keen not to stay on the bench for much longer and he may be deployed in Tuesday night's Champions League tie at home to Istanbul Basaksehir, a game some believe is vital to prove he's worthy of starting games.

Having made his England debut this month he'll also have an eye on Gareth Southgate's Euro 2020 squad and Red Devils boss Solskjaer said Henderson will get his opportunities to impress.

He said: "Dean wants to stay at Man United and play for Man United.

"I disagree completely if (you are suggesting) tomorrow is a make-or-break for Dean.

"He's come back in, he is training really well, he's maturing. He's had some games.

"He's training with, for me, one of the best goalkeepers in the world. He's got potential to be one of the best goalkeepers in the world. It's a great competition between them.

"I don't buy that argument that it's a make-or-break for him.

"It's not up to me to keep everyone happy, you know. I've said that a few times. The performances will always be the deciding factor if you play or not.

"I think every position that you play for Man United, it is your duty or your responsibility to make me and the coaches happy, so then there's a bigger chance you can play next time."
