Preparing for the first leg of their Champions League play-off against Austrian champions LASK Linz next week, the anticipated capture of Baur will bring a long-running negotiation to an end.

Determined to secure a fee of around £7million for a player with 12 months to run on his current deal Paderborn played hardball. Baur, 22, wanted to move to Scotland after agreeing terms on a four year deal and will now be granted his wish after the clubs reached a compromise.

Celtic are also close to a loan deal for a left-back and remain in the market for a goalkeeper.

Baur’s arrival will clear the way for midfielder Reo Hatate to leave the club.

West Ham are also expected to return with an offer close to £25million for Belgian international Arne Engels.

Celtic are reluctant to sell right-back Alistair Johnston to Everton but want a fee in excess of £15million. The English Premier League are now assessing a number of options.
