Celtic legend John Hartson sends Belfast boxer good luck message ahead of pro debut

Rising Belfast boxer James McGivern will make his professional debut on Wednesday night with the backing of a Celtic football legend.

Former Hoops striker John Hartson sent McGivern a 'good luck' message ahead of his bout with Jamie Quinn in Wakefield.

McGivern - a former Commonwealth Youth Games gold medallist - shared Hartson's video message on his Facebook page.

"It’s not everyday a Celtic legend sends you a good luck message. I’m over the moon thank you BIG BAD John," McGivern said.

In his message, Hartson says: "Hello, this is a message for James 'The Natural' McGivern. Good luck James in your fight coming up, your first professional fight, in Wakefield.

"I just want to wish you well. With a name like James 'The Natural' McGivern you're definitely going to win.

"I hear you're a big Celtic fan, and that is good."

Hartson added: "Good luck, James. I know you're going to win. All the best."

McGivern was due to make his professional bow earlier this year but was forced to wait because of coronavirus restrictions.

He will finally get his chance on Wednesday night on a big MTK Fight Night in Wakefield.

Also on the card is unbeaten Belfast welterweight Lewis Crocker who fights Louis Greene for the WGO European title.

The MTK Fight Night will be streamed live on the iFL TV YouTube channel with fans able to watch it HERE
