Celtic legend Chris Sutton and former Ranger Alex Rae clash in heated exchange

There were certainly fireworks in Paisley on Wednesday night but they weren't just being launched from the Celtic end.

It's been another week littered with talking points in Scottish football and, as ever, strong opinions have been aired.

BT Sport's build-up to St Mirren hosting Celtic featured plenty of reaction to Sunday's explosive clash between the Hoops and Rangers.

The result itself, a 2-1 win for Neil Lennon was the last thing on the agenda as Chris Sutton slaughtered Rangers , Steven Gerrard and Andy Halliday.

Gerrard accused Celtic of playing the victim card over Scott Brown after the skipper was on the receiving end in a handful of flashpoints and came under fire for celebrating in front of Rangers fans.

Sutton accused Rangers of deflection tactics, insisted they'd overcelebrated themselves in the past and tore into "bang average" Halliday, which provoked a strong response from former Ranger Alex Rae.

Sutton said: "We saw Andy Halliday, a player who at Ibrox they were talking about getting a DVD out about him because he made one tackle which was 80/20 in his favour and he's made a few throw-ins this season.

"He's a bang average player and he's trying to use these things, do your business on the pitch, you've had one win in the last three seasons.

"It's massive deflection tactics talking about Celtic and let me tell you, Rangers haven't made progress this season - we hear everybody banging on about it.

"They've lost three times to Aberdeen, Kilmarnock have been better than them in the league. Rangers haven't beaten Hibs, all this stuff about Steven Gerrard making progress is nonsense - I've never heard so much waffle."

Sutton had also claimed he'd never play Alfredo Morelos again after the striker's fifth red card of the season.

And that prompted Rae to hit back.

He said: "Absolutely (I would play him again). Chris is getting a bit excited, he contradicts himself."

Sutton branded Rae a "Rangers cheerleader", but he went on: "Big man, I've given you the courtesy, at least let me retort.

"You said you weren't happy with him, then you go back to huddles, stick to the incidents here."

Sutton asked Rae to explain the apparent contradiction and he replied: "You said you didn't agree with him (Brown celebrating) at the end."

Sutton replied: "No I said it's not for me but you're missing the bigger point."

But Rae continued: "He doesn't have to do it in front of them (the Rangers fans), it's the Celtic captain we're talking about. Have a wee bit of dignity and walk away from the situation."

Sutton was unimpressed and again pointed to Rangers players celebrating in the past.

Neil Lennon clears Celtic skipper Scott Brown of blame but hits out at firework yob

He said: "So we blame Scott Brown for everything? So it's OK when Rangers players do it, they're within their rights to do it? 'Blame Scott Brown for everything!' That's embarrassing, it's deflection tactics."

Rae then hit back: "I'm surprised you're sticking up for him, cheerleader for Celtic these days!"
