Celtic legend Billy McNeill tribute posters vandalised overnight by sick yobs ahead of funeral

Posters of Celtic legend Billy McNeill lifting the European Cup set up across Glasgow have been vandalised by 'vile' yobs ahead of his funeral.

The Lisbon Lion's funeral procession is taking place in the city today, with thousands set to pay tribute along the streets and at Celtic Park .

Black and white posters showing the iconic 1967 moment had been put up along the route of the funeral procession in a nod to the Hoops hero.

But, in a shocking act of vandalism, some of the posters lining the streets have been targetting.

Pictures show one poster covered in red paint, while another had been torn off completely.

Outraged Celtic fans have shared the images online, hitting out at the "vile scumbag" responsible.

Supporter page Celtic FC to the Core told their Facebook followers: "Received a message this morning and been asked to share this - a mate of mine has just gone a cycle past Celtic park and noticed some vile scumbag has vandalised the McNeill posters that have been put up along the route of the funeral.

"If anyone knows who put the posters up could you let them know or if anyone could fix it.. Be horrible for the McNeill family to see this.

"This is absolutely shocking and no need it's vile! There is some low life people out there!"

The funeral begins at city centre church St Aloysius at 11.30am before the cortege heads to Celtic Park where thousands of fans and mourners will line the streets.

After images of the vandalism were posted on social media, fans from both sides of the Old Firm were quick to unite in condemnation.

John Brown wrote: "When graves and statues, are vandalised, whoever did it should be ashamed, he was a great player and man.

"They're lowlifes and scumbags. As a Rangers fan I pray and hope, they find whoever is responsible".

Janette Minto added: "That is totally disgusting, there are so many sick people about.

"I am not a Celtic supporter but have so much respect for Billy McNeil - hope they get who they are."

And Jacqueline Connolly added: "They forget he was not just a footballer, he was a loving husband, grandad,uncle and a good friend to many.

"I pray to god this is sorted so they don’t hurt The McNeill family anymore than they are already hurting".
