Celtic lead tributes after Billy McNeill's grandson Matthew McCombe passes away

Celtic are leading the tributes after the tragic passing of Billy McNeill's grandson Matthew McCombe.

Matthew's mum Paula McCombe confirmed this morning that the 21-year-old's body was found in Amsterdam.

Matthew was last seen on Saturday March 14 in the Dutch capital, where he was celebrating his 21st birthday.

And Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell says the club are 'devastated' to hear the news and offered their support to the McNeill family at this difficult time.

He said: "The passing of Matthew is devastating news for the entire McNeill family and our thoughts and prayers are very much with all family members at such a very difficult time.

“We know the search for Matthew has been long and difficult and everyone at the club is hugely saddened that it has concluded in this way, with such a heartbreaking result.

“For such a fine young man to be taken so early in his life is a real tragedy. Clearly, we will be here to offer the McNeill family our absolute, heartfelt support.”

Celtic winger Mikey Johnston also paid his respects on Twitter as he posted a picture of the pair playing football growing up.

He said: "Absolutely gutted to hear the news about Matthew, amazing memories growing up together. Thoughts are with Paula and Charlie. RIP Matthew."

Matthew was once involved with the Hibs academy set-up and the Easter Road club also sent their well wishes to his family and friends.

They said: "Everyone at Hibernian is saddened at the news of the passing of Matthew McCombe, grandson of Billy McNeill.

"Matthew was once part of our Academy set-up, playing alongside the likes of Fraser Murray and Ryan Porteous. Our thoughts are with family and friends at this time."
