Celtic keep Filip Benkovic on radar but yet to launch return bid for Leicester City defender

Celtic chiefs are running the rule over a number of options to bolster their ranks in central defence but are yet to make contact with Leicester City over Filip Benkovic, according to reports.

The Croatian centre half was recalled to the King Power Stadium from a loan spell at Cardiff City by former Hoops boss Brendan Rodgers, sparking rumours he may return to Parkhead after previously spending a year in Glasgow.

Neil Lennon worked with the 23-year-old, originally signed under Rodgers, when he took over as boss in January 2019 and may yet return with a bid.

But the Daily Record reports no official contact has yet been made between the two clubs over the transfer as the Parkhead side mull over other options.

Benkovic was restricted to just one appearance for the Bluebirds in his brief stay in the Welsh capital and is yet to make his Premier League debut for the Foxes after a £13 million move from Dinamo Zagreb.

He played 20 times for Celtic in the 18/19 season, lifting the third of the clubs four straight trebles in the process.

Rodgers, whose Leicester side face Stoke City in the FA Cup on Saturday, told his pre-match press conference he would be open to the idea of the Croatian international returning to his former side.

He said: "Celtic would be a great move for him. He’s at the age where he really needs to be playing and that didn’t quite materialise at Cardiff.

“I would never blame another manager for not playing someone because circumstances can change all the time but unfortunately it didn’t work out.

“It’s quite simple really, it’s now a case of finding somewhere where he can go next and get some game time.”
