Celtic join Rangers in SFA racism summit praise as Peter Lawwell issues 'time it stopped' declaration

Celtic have praised the SFA for their summit that brought Scottish top flight clubs together to tackle racism.

On Wednesday, Hampden bosses held a meeting on racial discrimination in the game following the abuse suffered by Glen Kamara in the Europa League clash against Slavia Prague high on the agenda.

Livingston captain Marvin Bartley and former Scotland women's star Leanne Ross were also announced as two new advisors on the governing body's Equality and Diversity Advisory Board.

Representatives from Celtic, Rangers and the rest of the Premiership sides joined the meeting in the hope of tackling racism and discrimination within the game.

Following the meeting, current Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell said the Parkhead club hope to work with the authorities to tackle the issue.

Lawwell said: “Unfortunately, across many years, numerous Celtic players and staff have been subjected to various forms of racism and discrimination.

“Whether it relates to Celtic or any other club, it is time it stopped. Racism or any other form of discrimination should have no place in football or society and we need to do all we can to eradicate such prejudice.

“As a club open to all since 1888 we will continue to do all we can to promote this hugely important message and we look forward to working with other clubs and the wider football authorities to tackle this issue.”

Rangers captain James Tavernier also issued a call to action to those involved in the game and at social media giants.

The Ibrox skipper said: “It is vital that football authorities, clubs, government bodies and social media companies work together to educate and empower to ultimately, eradicate hatred from our game and society in general.

“We are keen to continue to engage but highlighted that we need to see clear outcomes from discussions rather than simply ticking a box."
