Celtic job could tempt Frank Lampard as Harry Redknapp reveals dream Old Firm scenario

Harry Redknapp reckons Frank Lampard would jump at the chance to manage Celtic and renew rivalries with Rangers boss Steven Gerrard.

The former England international was sacked by Chelsea after just 18 months in charge on Monday with the side sitting ninth in the Scottish Premiership table.

Within hours, the former Stamford Bridge favourite was talked about as a potential successor to under fire Neil Lennon in Glasgow, with some fans salivating over the prospect of the 42-year-old standing opposite ex-Liverpool hero Gerrard in the Old Firm derby.

It also piqued the interest of former Tottenham and West Ham boss Redknapp, who gave nephew Lampard his debut for the Hammers at 17.

The Hoops have been linked with a variety of managers after a calamitous season in which they have slipped more than 20 points behind rivals Rangers at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

Former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez, who recently left Dalian Professional in China, and ex-AFC Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe have also been touted for the position should Lennon leave at the end of the campaign.

And Redknapp believes Lampard, whose only previous managerial experience was a season at Derby County, could be tempted to follow Gerrard's example by taking the Celtic hotseat.

“That’s certainly something that would interest any manager. It’s a great football club to come and manage, that’s for sure," h told the Daily Record.

“Neil Lennon is still there so I wouldn’t want to talk too much about someone else taking his job but obviously it would be interesting to see Frank in direct opposition to Steven Gerrard.

“I don’t know whether, if the Celtic job came up, it would be something that would interest Frank. Obviously Neil Lennon is still in charge and I wouldn’t want to see him lose his job.

“Would Frank want to jump straight back in if it did become available? I wouldn’t know.

“But you could certainly see the appeal.”
