Celtic issue statement as fans hospitalised following Rome stabbings

Celtic have confirmed two fans have been hospitalised after being stabbed in Rome.

News broke in the early hours of this morning two supporters had suffered injuries after being attacked outside Flann O'Brien pub in the Italian capital.

Thousands of fans have travelled out to Rome ahead of Celtic's Europa League clash against Lazio this evening.

In a tweet, Celtic advised this morning: "Celtic can confirm that 2 fans have been injured after being stabbed last night.

"Both are now in hospital and will receive every support from the Club and the British consulate in Rome.

"Again we would strongly advise supporters to closely follow all guidance issued by the Club."

Tensions are high ahead of tonight's fixture in Rome, with warnings Lazio fans may seek revenge for a banner displayed by Celtic fans in Glasgow in the reverse fixture last month, which depicted Italian dictator Benito Mussolini hanging upside down.

Celtic fans have been advised by the Foreign Office not to wear their club colours while visiting Italy following the team's 2-1 win on October 24.

And the club have issued further guidance for supporters in Italy today, in which they advise: "under no circumstances should supporters make their own way to the stadium."

The game is due to kick off at the Stadio Olimpico at 5.55pm UK time this evening.
