Celtic idol Chris Sutton pays tribute to 'hero' dad who died on Boxing Day

Celtic hero Chris Sutton has paid tribute to his dad after he passed away aged 76 on Boxing Day.

The Hoops legend described his late father Mike as “my hero” after telling of his tragic passing following a battle with dementia.

Sutton posted a photo of himself with his dad, a footballer himself who played for Norwich and Chester in the 60s.

The 47-year-old wrote on Twitter: “My dad Mike sadly passed away yesterday.

“He was a great sportsman, teacher, husband, dad and grandad. He was my hero and I will miss him so much.”

Football pundit Sutton has campaigned on the issue of dementia in the sport.

He has urged the FA to do more to protect players after research found a link between heading the ball and dementia.

Thousands of fans offered condolences to the former Blackburn and Chelsea forward on social media alongside colleagues from the football world.

Football Focus host Dan Walker said: “Really sorry to hear about your dad Chris. I know you have been valiantly fighting his corner for a long time. May he rest in peace.”

Ex-Manchester City ace Micah Richards posted: “Condolences. Sorry to hear that news!”

Ex-Rangers ace Charlie Adam, now at Dundee, wrote: “Sorry for your loss.”

Fellow BT Sport pundit Rio Ferdinand posted: “ Sorry to hear this Chris. Continue raising the awareness. Blessings to your family.”

Fans paid their respects to Mike after Sutton made the announcement.

One supporter wrote: “Sorry to read about your loss. Take care.”

Another added: “Such sad news Chris he was such a good teacher. Take peace from knowing he showed us the way in our formative years...lovely man.

“RIP Mr Sutton condolences to your family.”

A third fan said: “Devastated for you, Chris. Dementia is a horrible thing for everyone involved, not just the loved one who suffers from it.

“No more suffering now and he will be immensely proud of you for everything you’ve done for him. A lifetime of memories you’ll have to cherish.”

Another tribute read: “Sorry for your loss. The campaigning you’ve spearheaded will help so many people.”
