Celtic icon Martin O'Neill fires dig at Hugh Dallas as he admits Helicopter Sunday heartbreaker was his 'absolute nemesis'

Former Celtic boss Martin O'Neill has claimed he will "never get over" the trauma of losing the title in the most dramatic circumstances possible to Rangers in 2005.

The legendary boss won seven trophies and reached the UEFA Cup Final in his five year spell in charge from 2000.

But the former Ireland and Aston Villa manager admits the defining final game against Motherwell has been difficult to shake, describing it as his "nemesis".

Celtic played the Steelmen on the final day of the season knowing that a win would take them to the championship for the fourth time in five years.

They dominated the game and lead through a Chris Sutton goal from the 29th minute but a stunning two goal salvo from Scott McDonald in the final two minutes destroyed their chances as Rangers defeated Hibs at Easter Road to spark triumphant scenes.

In Motherwell, there was only desolation and O'Neill admits the game was a real low point.

And while the 68 year old admits the Hoops had only themselves to blame, he couldn't resist a light hearted pop at referee Hugh Dallas for missing what he claims was an obvious red card.

He told Go Radio : "That game will go down as my absolute nemesis.

"First of all you should have had a men sent off after about 20 or 25 minutes over on the far side of the pitch. Hopefully it wasn't you but you should have had a man off.

"Hugh Dallas was refereeing and Hugh was obviously reminding himself of some incidents that took place way back at Celtic where he had been hurt.

"So I think he decided that 'I think I will give the benefit of the doubt to the Motherwell player'.

"Gordon Marshall that particular day would have won the World Cup for you never mind anything else.

"Honestly. And then Rangers get a goal over at Hibernain and Hibs decide to play out the last 20 minutes as a 1-0 defeat because that was good enough for them to get into Europe.

"Listen, I can't blame anyone else. I blame ourselves. We missed chances and Marshall was brilliant. I will never get over it. I will never get over it, as you can tell."
