Celtic icon Billy McNeill's funeral will take place on May 3rd with march past club ground

Celtic icon Billy McNeill's funeral will take place on Friday, May 3 at St Aloysius Church in Garnethill.

Hoops supporters will get the chance to say farewell to the legendary captain and former manager when his cortege passes Celtic Park at around 1.30pm, with the funeral service taking place at 11.30am.

The Lisbon Lions hero was adored by the club he represented with distinction and his statue outside the ground has become a shrine for the legendary Celtic star in recent days.

McNeill passed away on Tuesday at the age of 79 and figures from the world of football have paid poignant tributes remembering one of football's true greats.

Celtic announced plans to honour Cesar starting with a day of remembrance against Kilmarnock on Saturday.

Current stars will lay a wreath on the Celtic Way at 11.00am and there will be special video tributes before the game.

The Celtic players will wear a special black armband during the match and will have McNeill's No.5 emblazoned on their shorts during the Scottish Cup Final against Hearts.

There will also be a minute's applause for Cesar before the game against Killie and the former defender's family believe it's a fitting tribute to man who gave so much to the club he loved.

They said: "We do not believe football stadiums were ever built to be to be silent. Our father would not have wanted that. They should be places of noise, passion and enjoyment.

"Football was his life and Celtic Park was a very large part of that. So please celebrate his life with a moment of cheers, songs and applause because that would make him feel at home again.”

"Billy will also be honoured and celebrated further at Celtic’s last fixture of the season, the Scottish Cup final against Hearts, which takes place at Hampden on the poignant date of Saturday, May 25. All the Celtic first team will wear Billy’s famous Number 5 on the Celtic shorts in tribute to a man who gave so much to Celtic and to Scottish football."
