Celtic icon Billy McNeill honoured with poignant tribute at the scene of his finest hour

The Estadio Nacional - the scene of Billy McNeill and Celtic's greatest triumph.

It was at this historic Portuguese stadium in 1967 that the Lisbon Lions were born, mauling a famous Inter Milan side to become the first British team ever to lift the European Cup.

McNeill holding the famous old trophy aloft is perhaps the most iconic image in Celtic's storied 131 years.

And now, following the legendary defender's passing aged 79, a simple, touching tribute has been left to the great man at the site of his finest hour.

An unknown fan laid flowers, a Celtic shirt and a short note at the gates of the stadium in honour of the man nicknamed Cesar.

The current Hoops team did the club's greatest ever skipper proud on Saturday with a 1-0 win over that Kilmarnock that takes them to within a point of eight-in-a-row.

Jozo Simunovic, wearing McNeill's number 5 jersey, rose highest with 67 minutes played to head home a truly fairytale goal.

McNeill's family were in attendance at Celtic Park and the Croatian defender gifted his match-winning shirt to them after the final whistle.
