Celtic hit with UEFA fine as Lazio banner incurs sanction

Celtic have been fined €15,000 (£12,901) by UEFA for the banners they unveiled in their home win over Lazio, with the Italian club also sanctioned for offensive chanting.

The Hoops claimed a 2-1 win at Celtic Park last month, before securing their first ever win in Italy a few weeks later to qualify for the last 32 of the Europa League with two games to spare.

Events off the pitch took some of the spotlight from the former game though, with Lazio fans marching through the streets of Glasgow giving fascist salutes and singing 'Avanti Ragazzi di Buda', an anti-communist song popular with the Italian far-right.

The Green Brigade unveiled several banners before the match, including one imploring their opponents to "f*** off" in Italian, and a depiction of Benito Mussolini hanging with the slogan 'follow your leader'.

UEFA took a dim view of the incidents inside the stadium, charging Celtic with "illicit banners" and offensive chanting, and also applying the latter sanction to Lazio.

Today the governing body has released its verdict and they've decided to fine the Parkhead club for the third time this season and the 19th time since 2007.

It's the latest in a long list of fines Celtic have been forced to face due to fan behaviour.

Lazio have also been hit with a €10,000 (£8601) for illicit chanting during the clash at Celtic Park, which Celtic won 2-1 thanks to goals from Ryan Christie and Christopher Jullien.
