Celtic hit back at Scottish Government as club say officials approved Dubai trip

Celtic have defended their decision to travel to Dubai after the Scottish Government commented on their winter training camp.

Neil Lennon and his squad are in the UAE this week but the Celtic Park club have come in for heavy criticism for jetting off to the Middle East for what many believe wasn’t an essential trip.

The Government have said they expect the Scottish FA to take a closer look at the Scottish Premiership champions’ decision to travel.

But the club have hit back, insisting that Government officials approved the trip back in November and maintained that if they hadn’t received that, then they wouldn’t have gone.

A statement read: "The training camp was arranged a number of months ago & approved by all relevant footballing authorities & @scotgov through the Joint Response Group on 12th November 2020.

"The team travelled prior to any new lockdown being in place, to a location exempt from travel restrictions. The camp, the same one as we have undertaken for a number of years has been fully risk assessed.

"If the club had not received Scottish Government approval then we would not have travelled."
