Celtic hero Frank McGarvey tribute paid by Clyde ahead of Kelty Hearts clash

Clyde on Saturday paid tribute to legend Frank McGarvey by holding up a signed shirt that he wore when helping them to win the Second Division title in 1993.

Better known for successful spells at Liverpool and Celtic, which were bookended by stints at St Mirren, McGarvey ended his senior career at the Bully Wee by helping them to silverware, before dropping down to Junior level with Shotts Bon Accord and Troon.

King’s Park man McGarvey – who sadly passed away on January 1 following a battle with pancreatic cancer – arrived at Clyde in 1991 from Queen of the South and spent two years there, where he would score 22 goals in 54 appearances.

Clyde held a minute’s applause ahead of their 2-1 League One defeat against 10-man Kelty Hearts at New Douglas Park, and held up the jersey Frank wore the day he scored to win the Second Division title 30 years ago.

McGarvey won everything possible in Scottish football, winning medals for the Premier League, First Division, Second Division, Scottish Cup and League Cup.

Sadly, Clyde couldn’t get a win in memory of Frank , with Ross Cunningham’s strike just a consolation in the defeat to Kelty.

It leaves Clyde ninth in League One and 16 points adrift of safety as they scrap it out with bottom side Peterhead to avoid automatic relegation.

Boss Jim Duffy said: “We are bitterly disappointed. We were a bit erratic at times when they went down to 10 men, but we got ourselves an equaliser and looked to be in the ascendancy.

“But we’ve gifted Kelty the points with a penalty.”

Clyde are set to face Hamilton at New Douglas Park tonight in the SPFL Trust quarter-finals.
