Celtic hero backs Declan Gallagher to thrive in Scotland Euros test

Former Celtic and Scotland star Tosh McKinlay says having experienced guys around him helped settle his nerves when called up for international duty in 1995, aged 29.

And he says Motherwell defender Declan Gallagher will be exactly the same at this summer's European Championships, ahead of a move to Aberdeen next season.

McKinlay was a late addition to Scotland's squad for a qualifier against Greece, with Ally McCoist scoring a crucial winner that helped them get to Euro 96 in England.

Gallagher, 30, isn't quite in the same scenario as talented wing-back McKinlay, but will still have plenty of people around him that can help settle the nerves.

He said: "Young Gallagher I'm sure will take it all in his stride too.

"He will thrive on the experience and he has some decent players alongside him as well, just like I did.

"He's got Kieran Tierney, Andy Robertson and Scott McTominay all operating around him. He's also got Stephen O'Donnell out on the right who he knows from his club side.

"I'm sure they will all enjoy it. There will be no fear in these guys."

McKinlay's Scotland side missed out on a quarter-final place by a single goal in 1996, and McKinlay reckons the current crop can do well enough against the Czech Republic, 'Auld Enemy' England and Croatia to qualify out of the group stages for the first time ever.

"My squad was a whisker away at Euro 96," he said. "We missed out on qualifying out the group by one goal.

"At France 98 we took it to the last game against Morocco.

"But I think this squad is capable of going one step further.

"I don't think England will be looking forward to us going to Wembley. They will be under pressure just like they were back in '96.

"Steve Clarke has got us playing a tight, club team. A good result against the Czechs at Hampden will set us on our way.

"Andy Robertson, Kieran Tierney and Scott McTominay are playing against these top players every week so they will have nothing to fear."
