Celtic handed Thomas Henry transfer lifeline as deal 'back on' after Gent hit roadblock

Celtic may be back in the running for striker Thomas Henry as negotiations between Gent and OH Leuven come to a reported standstill.

Ange Postecoglou is on the hunt for a new striker and the Daily Record reported last week that hotshot Henry was high on the list of priorities.

The towering target man netted 21 goals last season and has started the new campaign with a bang, scoring three in Leuven's opening four games.

He was initially tipped as the main contender to displace Odsonne Edouard but later reports suggested Gent had stolen a march, with Henry preferring to stay in Belgium - where he has spent the last three years of his career.

Celtic shifted their focus to Greek hitman Georgios Giakoumakis instead and are competing with Werder Bremen for his signature.

But it now appears Henry, who was their plan A, may once again be an option.

The Daily Record report that Gent's offer of £5.2m plus add-ons has been rejected by OH Leuven. It meets their valuation, but they want the fee paid up front, while Gent are only prepared to pay in instalments.

Celtic had been tipped to bid £7m - but it is likely the guaranteed fee is closer to what Gent have offered.

The Hoops may have the edge of they do revive their interest after Wednesday's win over AZ Alkmaar moved them closer to the Europa League.

Gent, meanwhile, will play in the Europa Conference League this season if they can come through their playoff tie with Polish side Rakow.
