Celtic handed huge Europa League boost as Sparta Prague given worst possible preparation

Celtic's Europa League opponents Sparta Prague will go in cold to their first meeting as they miss a month of league action.

The Premiership champions have been handed a tough group and their hopes of making the knockout phase were hit by a 3-1 defeat to AC Milan on Thursday.

A trip to face Ligue 1 leaders Lille awaits before a double-header against Sparta but a government decree may have played in Celtic 's favour.

A state of emergency has been declared in the Czech Republic due to the coronavirus pandemic, with cases on the rise all over Europe.

And that has seen football in the country shut down for the duration, with matches stopped for three rounds.

The state of emergency will last until November 3  - just two days before Celtic travel to Prague.

The restrictions do not affect European fixtures, with Sparta hosting Lille in the opening group game.

But the shutdown means that Vaclav Kotal's side won't have played a league game for a month when Celtic come to town.

Sparta sit top of the Czech league after six games but haven't played a domestic match since beating Jablonec on October 3.

That means they'll have faced only Lille and Milan in the space of a month when Celtic visit Prague.
