Celtic given Champions League boost as Reykjavik set to receive Parkhead travel clearance

KR Reykjavik are set to face Celtic in Glasgow next week as Neil Lennon’s team also landed a potential Champions League second-qualifying round tie at home to Ferencvaros or Djurgarden.

The Icelandic outfit are confident of confirming travel plans as they look to secure a charter flight for the first qualifying round tie.

KR Reykjavik’s domestic league has been suspended due to Covid-19, but the club believe they will be able to head for Glasgow’s East End and tackle a clash a week tonight.

Club spokesman Sveinbjorn Thorsteinsson said: “We are still working on it as the rules are we need to go on a private plane from our national airport, but it should not be a problem.

“The regulations of UEFA say you cannot go on a normal flight. You need to take a charter. I think we are going to be fine.

“We are intending to have around 30 people coming on the aeroplane. We believe the tie is Tuesday, so we will fly on Monday.”

Celtic would have to play the game at a neutral venue if the Icelandic side did not receive clearance, but look set to stay on their own soil and are also due to play the following midweek again at Celtic Park if they progress to the next stage.

Lennon’s team were drawn at home to face a tie against the winners of Hungarians Ferencvaros or Swedish outfit Djurgarden.
