Celtic flop Efrain Juarez to join New York City as Ronny Deila's assistant

Celtic flop Efrain Juarez is set to join up with Ronny Deila as one of his assistants at New York City.

The Mexican will form part of Deila's coaching staff at the club having played under him at Valerenga last season.

Deila wants Juarez as part of his team because of the amount of Spanish speaking players involved in his squad, with neither the Norwegian or assistant Nick Cushing able to speak the language.

Deila told VG : “With so many Spanish-speaking players in the stable, it is an advantage with someone in the coaching team who speaks Spanish.

"That’s one of the reasons I’m bringing Juárez with me. Also, because he is a good person and a good footballer.”

Juarez left Celtic two years before Deila took over as manager after a miserable spell in Glasgow.

The initial fee of £2m for the midfielder saw him join Neil Lennon's side but he struggled for game time and form and played just 21 times in all competitions.

He moved back to Mexico to join America before a successful spell with Monterrey.

The 31-year-old then had a short spell in the MLS with Vancouver Whitecaps before heading to Norway with Deila's Valerenga.
