Celtic FC demand police action after players abused by vile sectarian bigots at Ibrox before match against Rangers

Celtic Football Club have demanded police action after a number of their players were abused by vile sectarian bigots ahead of Saturday's Old Firm match.

The club have raised the issue with cops after a crowd of people gathered outside Ibrox before launching sectarian abuse at the players as they left the team bus.

Some of the group could be heard shouting “fenian c**t” and “papist c**t” as the squad left the vehicle.

Others launched further sickening abuse such as “gunge that paedo” and “f*****g paedo c**t”.

Police held the group off as players continued to spill out of the coach.

Now Celtic - who went on to lose 1-0 to their bitter rivals - are demanding action and the club say they hope "all efforts" are made to identify those responsible.

A spokesperson for Celtic FC said: "The sectarian abuse suffered by our players and staff is completely unacceptable.

"We have raised this issue with Police Scotland and they have confirmed they are investigating the matter. Clearly we would hope that all efforts are made to identify those responsible and for all appropriate action to be taken."

Police Scotland Superintendent Stevie Dolan said: "We can confirm that an investigation is ongoing into abusive comments and singing around the time of the Celtic FC team coach arriving at Ibrox Stadium prior to the football match on Saturday, 2 January.

"This is an active enquiry and no arrests have been made at this stage."
