Celtic fans warned to stay away from Parkhead amid reports of 'gathering' before Old Firm match

Police Scotland say they are "aware" of reports circulating online urging Celtic fans to gather outside Celtic Park later this month prior to the Old Firm fixture.

The widely-circulated post, headed 'Defend the stadium from the Rangers fans', is asking Hoops supporters to gather at Celtic Way in front of the stadium before the game kicks off.

Supporters are encouraged to "meet at the Celtic way ready to protect the statues, the shop an the stadium from being damaged" and to "make as much noise as possible", with the suggestion that people who do attend "wear face coverings".

The post also notes "we all seen what happened after they won the league and the damage they caused" in reference to Rangers fans and the events which took place on Sunday in George Square in the centre of Glasgow - which saw memorial benches destroyed.

When asked if they are aware of the posts, police say they would "strongly remind everyone" that all gatherings are currently prohibited under the current covid restrictions and urge the public to comply with them.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "We are aware of these reports circulating online, however we would strongly remind everyone that in line with current Scottish Government coronavirus regulations, all gatherings are currently prohibited and we would urge members of the public to comply with these restrictions."
