Celtic fans face Lazio sweat as Italian club are hit with UEFA racism charge

Lazio have been charged by UEFA over alleged racist behaviour which could result in the Italian giants having sections of their stadium closed.

That could be a blow for Celtic who are due to receive 9000 tickets for the clash on November 7.

The Serie A side were already hit with a stand closure for their game against Rennes last time round after previous racist chanting and if they are found guilty again could see more of their stadium - or potentially all of it - shut down.

That scenario would also mean that no Celtic fans could attend the match at the Stadio Olimpico next month.

It's more likely that a full stand closure would take place but that could also impact Celtic fans if Lazio decide to cut their allocation due to their own punishment.

They then travel to Rome for the second match two weeks later and will hope to have their supporters in attendance.

They won't find discover their fate until October 17, when the charge is heard by the UEFA disciplinary board.

The Stadio Olimpico has a capacity of 70,000 and Celtic are due to get a larger than normal allocation.

Last week, Lazio president Claudio Lotito weighed into the racism row in Italy by claiming that monkey noises weren't 'necessarily racist' as he also caused controversy being referring to 'normal, white skin'.

He said:  "It's not always the case that the 'buu' (the written form of the monkey noises at the stadium) corresponds to an act of discrimination or racism.

"I remember when I was little, a lot of non-coloured people, with normal, white skin, would do the 'buu' to try and put the opponent off from scoring in front of goal.

"It has to be interpreted.

"We have a lot of players of colour, I don't think that Lazio make a distinction based on the colour of the skin.

"Everyone can see how Lazio has behaved from this point of view."
