Celtic fans could face a late scramble to get to Budapest if they’re given the eleventh hour green light to get access to the Ferencvaros clash on Thursday.
The Parkhead club have contacted their Europa League rivals to discover if UK vaccine passports will allow them entry to the Groupama Arena after news that the UK vaccine passport is now being accepted in the EU.
But in a statement, Celtic said: “For clarification there has, as yet, been no approval for Celtic supporters to access the match against Ferencvaros in Budapest on Thursday.
“Following confirmation that the EU will now accept the UK vaccine certificate, Celtic has been in contact with Ferencvaros and we have been informed that Hungarian authorities have not yet agreed any change to the legislation which would be required to allow access to the match.
“Potentially, we may receive some news on this issue tomorrow (Tuesday) at the very earliest but we have received no indication with regards to the outcome.
“We will update supporters as soon as possible if there is a change to the current position.”
A late U-turn from local government meant many Celtic fans who had already bought tickets, accommodation and flights for the first match against Real Betis earlier this month were instead locked out.
The match is hugely significant for both sides with the Hoops winning when the sides met in Glasgow last month and Ferencvaros currently winless in the section and third place earning the consolation of a Europa Conference League place.
