Celtic fans attacked in Rome as bus from stadium 'ambushed' after Lazio win

More Celtic fans have reportedly been attacked in Rome after a bus full of supporters leaving the Stadio Olimpico was 'ambushed'.

It's understood the bus was targeted after it broke down, following Celtic's 2-1 Europa League win against Lazio, according to the BBC.

At this stage it is not known if any serious injuries were sustained. The previous evening (Wednesday), two Celtic supporters were hospitalised after being stabbed at an Irish bar in the Italian capital.

BBC Sport reporter Chris McLaughlin Tweeted from Rome at 11.30pm last night: "A number of #Celtic fans attacked following their club’s 2-1 victory over Lazio here in Rome.

"One group of fans ambushed after shuttle bus from stadium broke down.

"Unclear if any serious injuries."

Celtic were forced to issue a statement yesterday afternoon following Wednesday night's incident at the Flann O'Brien pub, saying: "Celtic can confirm that 2 fans have been injured after being stabbed last night.

"Both are now in hospital and will receive every support from the Club and the British consulate in Rome.

"Again we would strongly advise supporters to closely follow all guidance issued by the Club."

The club issued further guidance for supporters in Italy, advising: "under no circumstances should supporters make their own way to the stadium."

Tensions were high ahead of last night's match in Rome, with warnings Lazio fans may seek revenge for a banner displayed by Celtic fans in Glasgow in the reverse fixture last month, which depicted Italian dictator Benito Mussolini hanging upside down.

Celtic fans were advised by the Foreign Office not to wear their club colours while visiting Italy following the team's 2-1 win on October 24.

Neil Lennon's men secured a historic victory against Lazio last night, with another 2-1 win, ensuring the Scottish champions progress to the next stage of the Europa League.
