Celtic fan ownership backed as Dermot Desmond 'wouldn't stand in the way' claim made

Former Celtic chief Brian Dempsey believes Dermot Desmond wouldn't stand in the way of fan ownership.

The board's relationship with the Parkhead faithful has deteriorated over the course of the season as their Ten in a Row bid came up short with Rangers running away with the Premiership title.

Peter Lawwell will step down as chief executive at the end of the campaign as Dominic McKay takes over.

Supporters will be hoping the Scottish Rugby supremo's arrival will spark a change in fan engagement which they feel has been neglected under the current regime.

The Celtic Trust has formed this term to give supporters a voice, something they hope will eventually lead to a fan takeover.

And Dempsey, who saved the club alongside Fergus McCann in 1994, believes it's a proposition that majority shareholder Desmond would be open to make Celtic a "people's club again."

He told the Times: "I don't believe there's any question that Dermot Desmond, assuming he got the right money for his shares, is a man who would stand in the way of Celtic's expansion.

"So it's down to the supporters to come together again, sit down at the table with Dermot, produce their plans and offer to buy him and the others out, making Celtic a people's club again.

"They could then restart for the generations to come with a ten-year plan for growth as a footballing institution and a social institution.

"It's another uphill journey but it can be done because once you galvanise public opinion and the Celtic community then I believe that anything is possible."
