Celtic fan in Rafa Benitez, Xavi AND Iniesta radio moon shot but wage reveal sees Go Fund Me reality sink in

An ambitious Celtic fan has called on Dermot Desmond to break the bank and secure a trio of A-listers to carry the fight to Rangers next season.

Hoops diehard Derek believes a dream team of Rafa Benitez joined by Barcelona icons Xavi and Andres Iniesta is just the ticket to get fans back onside.

Neil Lennon exited Celtic on Wednesday with his side 18 points behind Rangers as John Kennedy takes the reins on an interim basis.

But incoming chief executive Dominic McKay and Desmond know fans are craving a big name to compete with Rangers in the coming years

And Derek is convinced he has the perfect formula that will get punters piling back in and also usher in a fresh trophy-laden era.

Speaking to Superscoreboard, he said: "If we are going to go down the route of a director of football then I think we should be quite adventurous.

"I would love to see us go for somebody like Rafa Benitez as director of football and I think we should really push the boat out and go for Xavi as manager and hope that he brings Andres Iniesta as his assistant."

Former Rangers star Andy Halliday was taken aback by the suggestion but admits he would be keen to see Iniesta on the pitch rather than the dugout.

"I thought it would be a brilliant signing (rather than coach) if Celtic could get him back to play.

"It would certainly be an exciting appointment for the country from the Hollywood aspect but I can't say I know much about the Qatari league.

"Certainly if he (Xavi) is half as good a manager as he was a player then it would be some appointment."

But Derek's dreams were quickly dashed when it was revealed Xavi alone earns an eye-popping £8.5m yearly salary with side Al Sadd.

Host Gordon Duncan quipped: "I think we might need to knock that on the head Derek unless you can start a Go Fund Me page."
