Celtic fan heckler told Paddy McGuinness to 'f**k off' as his Parkhead gig fell flat

Top Gear host Paddy McGuinness has revealed he bombed at a Celtic Park gig to celebrate the Lisbon Lions.

The comedian, 47, topped the bill at a night of celebration for the 40th anniversary of the club’s European Cup victory.

He was joined by Scots rockers Simple Minds as 2000 fans packed a marquee on the Parkhead turf for the event.

But McGuinness, famed for being one half of Channel 4’s Max and Paddy with comic Peter Kay, told how the crowd went flat after he followed a set by the Don’t You (Forget About Me) band.

The Bolton-born Take Me Out presenter walked on and off the stage in complete silence and was also heckled by audience members.

He said: “Rangers v Celtic is massive and I was booked for a gig by Celtic. It was me and Simple Minds and I was topping the bill.

“This is Simple Minds, world’s biggest rock band and gods in Scotland, and Celtic idolise them.

“Jim Kerr’s on stage giving it ‘don’t you forget about me’ and, I swear to God back in the day, they finished the set and everyone’s like, ‘Ahh Simple Minds, amazing’, and then the bloke went, ‘Anyone want a bit of comedy?’ and got nothing.”

Speaking on Sky One show Redknapp’s Big Night Out, he added: “This was like 15 years ago and I walked on to silence and I walked off to silence.

“I’ll never forget I got the mic and shouted good evening and I just heard one bloke right at the back went ‘F**k off’ and I was like, ‘Oh, no likey’.”

The gala dinner at Celtic Park was held on the eve of the club’s Scottish Cup final clash with Dunfermline in May 2007 which they won 1-0.

Celtic hero Stevie Chalmers, whose winning goal sealed the European Cup for the side in 1967, was among the guests on a night which ended with Gerry Marsden, of Gerry and the Pacemakers, performing You’ll Never Walk Alone.
