Celtic fan gets a red card from sheriff for turning up at court in jersey

A Celtic fan was kicked out of Paisley Sheriff Court for wearing his team’s jersey.

The supporter was believed to be in the building to watch a pal get sentenced.

But he was asked to leave for displaying his team’s colours.

Sheriff Frances McCartney ordered her bar officer to remove the visitor.

They said: “You’ll need to leave – you’re not appropriately dressed for court.”

The man had taken a seat wearing his club’s 1988 centenary top.

The judge was presiding over trials and deferred sentences when she spotted it.

She had entered the room less than a minute earlier.

The fan was asked to leave by a worker for the Scottish Courts and Tribunals Service.

Last summer, an accused was ordered to leave after turning up for a dock appearance wearing shorts.

Andrew Wandrum, 25, was told his outfit was “inappropriate” and his case would not be heard until he changed.

He had been due to be sentenced for no-showing an earlier court date.

Defence lawyer Gemma Rathey apologised on his behalf and insisted he meant no disrespect.

She claimed he had been working in Manchester and had been dropped off at the courthouse before going home to change.

But Sheriff Tom McCartney refused to listen to the steel worker.

He said: “I’m not prepared to deal with Mr Wandrum’s case while he’s wearing shorts.

“It is entirely disrespectful to the court and inappropriate.

“I will defer sentence until 2pm and expect Mr Wandrum to be back at court appropriately dressed and I will deal with this case then.”

Wandrum, of Paisley, returned after the lunch break and was fined £175 for failing to appear at the earlier court date.

Yob Lee Houston, 27, was also rapped by the same beak for turning up in shorts the year before at Paisley Sheriff Court.

He claimed he had “spilled juice” on his trousers as his mum drove him in.

He was allowed to stay, but warned over his dress.

Houston, from Bathgate, West Lothian, had appeared to review his community service for sparking a hotel rammy.
