Celtic face uphill task to sign World Cup star as German giants make 'formal enquiry'

Celtic could be set to miss out on World Cup star Ivan Basic after Eintracht Frankfurt joined the race to sign the Bosnian international.

The FC Astana midfielder was linked with a £2 million move to Parkhead after Hoops scouts monitored him.

His club manager in Kazakhstan conceded they would be willing to allow him to leave to advance his career if an acceptable bid came in.

However, reports in the former Soviet nation have revealed that Eintracht Frankfurt have made a formal enquiry for the 24-year-old and are keen to make a concrete bid.

Spanish side Elche have also been credited with an interest for Basic, who is the first player from the Kazakhstan League to play at a World Cup.

Astana manager Grigory Babayan stated last week: "We have to be realistic and accept that Ivan's participation at the World Cup is an important moment in his career and could open the way for him to move to a stronger European league.

"We understand this guy has a great career ahead of him.

"He can prove himself at this level and move on to a top league. We have no right to stand in his way."
