Celtic face UEFA action over Queen banners but Rangers avoid any charge over national anthem

UEFA have confirmed that Celtic will face disciplinary proceedings for banners they displayed during their clash with Shakhtar Donetsk in Warsaw - but Rangers will face NO action over singing the national anthem.

Hoops supporters at the Champions League clash in Poland had an anti-crown message on show in the ground less than a week after Queen Elizabeth II's sad passing, aged 96. Another made reference to Michael Fagan.

At Ibrox, Rangers defied UEFA orders over the anthem, but they will not face any action as they paid tribute to the Queen alongside a minute's silence, black armbands and a Union Jack tifo display in their showdown with Napoli at Ibrox last night. On Rangers, UEFA confirmed: "The incident is not the subject of any UEFA disciplinary proceedings."

On Celtic, they added: "Please be informed that proceedings have been opened against Celtic FC regarding a banner displayed during their UEFA Champions League match against FC Shakhtar Donetsk played on 14 September in Warsaw.

"The UEFA disciplinary bodies will decide on the matter in due course."

Ange Postecoglou's men picked up their first points of the Champions League section after a 1-1 draw with their Ukrainian opponents. They bossed the majority of the game but couldn't find that crucial second goal in their matchday two clash.

Their Old Firm rivals went down to a 3-0 defeat to Serie A high-flyers Napoli. It was a night filled with penalty and VAR drama with the home side reduced to ten-men after James Sands picked up two quick-fire yellow cards.

But Giovanni van Bronckhorst will take heart from the way his side played despite the defeat. It follows two big losses against Celtic and Ajax.
