Celtic Dubai trip addressed by Scottish Government who threaten to remove travel privileges

The Scottish Government “expect” the Scottish FA to investigate Celtic’s trip to Dubai.

And they “won’t hesitate” to stop clubs traveling abroad for European ties if they feel the privilege of international has been abused

The club have been heavily criticised for making the trip in the midst of a global pandemic while Scotland was plunged back into lockdown this afternoon.

Neil Lennon is putting his squad through their paces in the Middle Eastern sun this week ahead of returning in time for next Monday’s Scottish Premiership clash against Hibs.

Professional sport is exempt and the travel corridor between Scotland and UAE means Celtic were free to go without breaking any rules.

But now the Government has said that they expect the Hampden beaks to take a closer look at The Hoops decision to jet off.

And special dispensation for pro clubs to leave country could be revoked if it’s found that it has been taken advantage of.

A spokesperson said: "Following the First Minister's latest update to parliament, we would ask people not to travel internationally, across the UK or beyond their local authority unless absolutely essential.

"We would expect the SFA to look into Celtic's trip further - while there are travel exemptions in place for elite sports which are designed to facilitate international and European competition, if we feel they are being abused, we won't hesitate to remove this privilege."
